You probably know the feeling, when you’re trying to do something uber standard, but you’re struggling with it. It’s extra annoying because you know, it should be simple (which it eventually is 🙃).

Create a shortcut to the following: Double-click that shortcut to access the CTRL - ALT - DEL screen. Set both RDP sessions to Send Windows keys to remote window. Now, to send Ctrl-Alt-Del to the first session, use Alt-Ctrl-Del. To send commands to the second window, use Alt-Ctrl-End. 1.Use CTRL+ALT+END instead of CTRL+ALT+DEL. The best technique that everyone practices is to use CTRL+ALT+END instead of CTRL+ALT+DEL. The Remote Desktop uses the End key as a substitute for the Alt key. Since the combination we always use is used by our device, the application sends the End key and translates it as the Alt key.

I had just that feeling this week when I needed to change my AD password using a my MacBook. After getting a notification that one of my corporate passwords is about to expire, I logged-in to one of the stepping stone hosts using the Microsoft Remote Desktop client for macOS.

Ctrl + Alt + End – Display the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc is the local command) Alt + Home – Brings up the Start menu on the remote computer Ctrl + Alt + (+) Plus/ (-) Minus – Minus takes a snapshot of the active window and plus takes a snapshot of the entire remote desktop window.

But wait, what’s the proper key combination within the RDP client on macOS to change a password? For Windows, it’s easy. Just press CTRL – ALT – END within an RDP session and you get the change password option like the one below.

Based on my understanding, local machine control-alt-delete key combination is control-alt-delete. Virtual PC's control-alt-delete key combination is Right Alt - Delete. The macOS keyboard has a couple of different keys compared to a Windows device. The most obvious are:

Back to the issue at hand. To change the Windows (AD) password in an RDP session on a Windows box, it’s:

CTRL – ALT – END.

Within an RDP session on a Mac using the Mac keyboard, it’s:

fn + Control + Option + Backspace

Within an RDP session on a Mac using a standard US International keyboard, it’s: New edition torrent.

CTRL – ALT – DEL or CTRL – ALT – Backspace

There you have it!

When your Windows box is not part of a domain, you can change the password in the Windows settings menu below.

Today a co-worker asked me how to send the infamous Control + Alt + Delete keystroke combination to a machine he was working on via RDP.This is a pretty common keystroke to use when trying administer windows… it does have uses other than just killing the box.

With Virtual PC there is menu item to send the keystrokes on to the virtual box.Go to the Action menu and select the Ctrl + Alt + Del option.

And with Remote Desktop?

Well it’s not quite as obvious. Actually it’s not an obvious solution at all…It might not even be documented!?

For the record, since I already knew the answer I decided to be lazy and didn’t bother to search the tubes for any official documentation.
